Choosing the first glider, CIMA K2

I’ve been communicating with Jana lately, she’s from Sky Paragliders in Chech Republic, the company that makes the world famous Cima K2 glider. They’re also one of the leading manufacturers of gliders for skydiving, paragliding, kiting etcetera. My initial plan was to get Ozone since James is the official distributor here but it’d be boring if everybody is using the same wings, couldn’t learn much from the same wing design.

The K2 glider I ordered is custom built for tropical weather, using high resistance material and I asked them to seam the trimmers so it’d still conform to its AFNOR certification but later in the years I could remove the seams and starts using the trimmers to do faster flights. That’d save me from buying two separate wings in the future, one wing for both functions. I also asked them to have two hang points, the higher hang point is for PPG and lower for PG. Again, it’ll save me from buying another glider for PG, just switch hang points and I could do both.

From the sizing calculations, I’d only need the Small size and I chose a red wing with bright yellow “S” logo in the middle. Can’t wait for my own wing to arrive and starts using it. I will also be the first Cima K2 owner in Malaysia, the manufacturer themselves were quite excited over this and because I’m the first owner here, I got quite a good discount from them (which of course I can’t disclose the price). Maybe I should start opening a glider shop in KL and become their authorized reseller for Southeast Asian region :-)

The delivery should be sometime early June, still a long time to wait but I won’t rush them to assemble the glider.

      Hi,

Thanks for stopping by. I’m new in this sport too, done a few flights and tried a few wing. IMHO, you should go for wings that has been proven to be safe and in this case I believe it’s either the Ozone Rush or Cima K2.

I’m used to fly the Ozone and Rush is my current favorite but Cima’s reputation is fast growing and the K2’s stability is well documented. K2 is collapse resistant, it’s easy to inflate and launch. Apco on the other hand, is a reflex wing and depending on who you ask, the answers will vary. I personally try to avoid reflex wings until I’ve reached several hundred flight hours or gained thousands of hours of flights before I’m confident that I’ll be able to handle reflex wings in any situation.

I have a few friends in Malaysia flying Apco wings and they’re pretty happy with it. Other types of reflex wing that is quite popular here is the Ozone’s Speedster.

p/s : I’m not sure where to buy wings in Mexico, I guess you’d have to contact the manufacturer’s contact person by email.

    Hey Yusmar,

Did you ever get your Cima K2, also looking at the same wing and it sounds like the same colour. Was wondering if you could email me a photograph or two to see how it looks? Are you happy with the purchase would you have done anything different if you started again? How did the stitched risers work out, have you popped them yet?

Look forward to hearing from you.
    Ben

      Hey,

Sorry for the late reply, this blog been getting too many spam comments and I had to manually check all comments when there’s spare time.

I had to postpone the delivery at the last minute and only recently resumed it and I believe it’d take some time before it reaches the shore. The color code I ordered was red with yellow “S” and white bellied, they’re using the high-resistance material due to tropical weather I’m in and as for the stitching quality I’m not sure, will have to wait for it to arrive.

For ground handling, I think most wings are pretty much the same. Recently I tried kiting on a paragliding wing from Niviuk and it’s just as easy as Ozone’s. I guess it depends on the wind condition and one’s ability to kite the wing.

I’ll definitely blog about the new K2 wing with its pictures once I have it flown myself.

    Hello Yasmur,
I have been reading your page and wanted to say hello . I am former hanglider pilot and am looking to switch to para-motors and trying to find a good beginner wing that will do what l need as a beginner but yet handle the often sudden turbulence and wind speed changes of the islands. I am in the Philippines and want to fly the Cima k-2 as a para-motor and a glider but l need a tandem set up. I see many people are flying them but l am told that they will not last long due to the thin materials and construction. Can you give me some realistic feedback on the longevity of the wing and its components? Any thoughts on this in your experience? Regards

      Hello Greg,

The CIMA K2 wing is excellent, I’ve been using it and it’s extremely easy to inflate and feels so light. It’s AFNOR certification and not EN classification but I think it’s EN-A for its ease of handling and extra margin of safety.

On the material, you’re right that the material is not meant for tropical weather as it’s meant for hiking or climbing and then glide. The one I have is made using HR (High Resistance) materials, it lasts as long as the ordinary material and as tough but you will notice that it’s lighter than the others.

But for flying tandem I don’t recommend this K2 model and I don’t think they have tandem version for it anyway, you’d have to check their website and ask the manufacturer for an accurate advice for that. I think they have another model for tandem flights, it’s not called K2. If you’re looking for a solo PG and PPG wing, the default setting includes both high and low hang points for both PPG and PG.

      Have fun!

    Hi Yusmar,
Apa kabar ? I had just placed an order to Sky Paraglider – Chez. For the CIMA K2HR. Hopefully I will receive it by middle of Feb.
Do you fly PPG ? I’m going to use the K2HR for PPG flying, with my weight of 85kg + engine+ reserve parachute and other gears, I choose the L size.
Can’t wait to try this Glider. perhaps you could give me info about the Flying Characteristic of the K2HR.
    Cheers.

      Hi Willy,

It’s a great wing, extremely easy to launch and feels very light. However… I had an interesting incident today, and I will blog the details of my experience afterwards.

As for the CIMA K2HR, in my opinion the brake is a bit long and you really have to pull longer than other wings to turn. Ground handling is extremely easy, the brakes are not as sensitive as other wings which means you could play around it and it won’t make drastic movement but somehow maintains its responsiveness to your steering commands.

In overall, I love the wing and it’s a perfect wing for PG. For PPG on the other hand, today I flew with it in mild wind and the take off was easy but the brakes, caused me a problem about 5-10 minutes later during flight.

I’ll post up video of my take-off and explain a bit what happened later in the blog.

p/s : don’t worry, you bought a very good wing. My wing is S size, I’m 75kg and was flying with Nirvana Rodeo (25kg) during mild wind and I wasn’t on full power during take-off. The angle of attack was good, feels very light during forward-launch and I have no complaints over this wing.

Salam and Hi yusmar, Im ann frm Malaysia. Now im considering to buy new wing and i am really interested to buy Cima K2, If you are a dealer of Cima K2 in Malaysia. It would be easy to buy that wing from you.For your information, I started flying in 2011 with 10 hours of flight.i fly occasionally and im using trike all the time. Now i am using one big wing and need a smaller wing for cross country and for flying in high wind condition.U can reply me via my email. Thanks

    Regards

      Hi Ann,

I read that you are flying on a trike and have approximately 10 hours of flying time, so you pretty much know how to handle the gliders on your own. For a cross-country flight on a trike, I recommend you another wing which is the Ozone Speedster (the size, I recommend M/L or L, not S). It’s an incredibly good wing designed specifically for paramotor, it’s a reflex wing but with the safety standard of an ordinary wing, easy to inflate compared to other reflex types and yes, I am the local dealer for Ozone gliders since I am now an official partner in AirVenture (we are the official distributor for all Nirvana paramotor engine and parts too).

For your purpose, I don’t recommend using Cima K2 for trike especially when you are planning for an extended length of flight unless you are ordering a specific build with the thicker/stronger lines. I don’t think it’s designed for such. Since you’re in Malaysia, why not you visit our flight school’s training base in Pulau Indah and give the Ozone Speedster a try and compare it with my Cima K2 in terms on ease of handling – you will be surprised on the similarity.

Email me at yusmar@gmail.com if you wish to arrange for a meetup at Pulau Indah.

p/s : which type of trike are you using – the Fresh Breeze or Nirvana’s?
