Gunung Payung in the southern tip of Bali is one of the most challenging paragliding site that I’ve been. While the slope looks benign, just like Timbis but the wind apparently is always very strong here. Taking off is not much of a problem but performing the top-landing at this site can be very challenging.
During my last trip here, I witnessed how Ketut Manda, an experienced resident instructor was doing tandem flight in the wind condition and he had to maintain the wing in big-ear even while taking off. Landing was even more challenging. As other visiting instructors had to bomb-out their landing at the beach, Ketut managed to perform several tandem flights successfully without any problems. Each time he landed, he would whistle to me and reminded that the wind is too strong – a friendly gesture that I shouldn’t be flying in the condition unless I’m extremely sure that I could manage the wind well.
This site, I would rate as for advanced pilots only and not for the faint hearted to attempt tricky maneuver for launchings and landings. But maybe when the wind is very mild, it would be very suitable for all levels.
