year of the bull

2008 was the Rat’s year… and 2009 will be the Ox’s. There’s no Ox here so the nearest is the Bull, or Water Buffalo. This, is according to the Chinese lunar calendar and I have no clue how and what it does.

2009 supposedly be the healing year and if one is into business, it’s going to be bullish and prosperous. Apparently, it’s going to be a better year than before… or is it? I don’t know and I don’t really think much what these mythological zodiac predictions about what future is going to be like – they’re never known to be accurate anyway and the self-proclaimed fengshui masters always write predictions that works in either ways of how things are going to be.

Anyway, we should always welcome any good wishes, optimism and positive thinking. So, to all my friends out there that are celebrating it and you strangers who just stumbled upon my blog and if you’re celebrating the Chinese lunar year, I wish you all Gong Xi Fa Chai and Happy Prosperous New Year!

Okay, now I’m going to spend my holiday photographing those lion dances, red lanterns and hopefully there will be lots of interesting characters in the temples for my portrait shots.

Mac turns 25.

Apple’s Macintosh, or what’s now known only as Mac, is now 25 years old. It was first introduced during Superbowl on Jan 22 1984 and it was the computer that changed the GUI and desktop world… or pretty much of it.

The Apple/Mac emblem went through several design revisions and from the colorful stripes to the now candy-like identity. I remember reading Wired article saying that Steve Jobs wanted the new Mac looks so good that it’s lickable. Hence the candy look.

As for the architecture, they always use cutting edge technologies especially for the graphics and put a lot of thoughts in the usability design. It created a cult-like followers worldwide and often described as Mac lovers rather than users, perhaps because Mac owners are often very defensive and gung-ho in championing their computing technology against Windows based computer owners.

Anyway, Apple’s decision to use BSD stacks for the kernel and using Intel processors were one of the wise moves by the designers in continuing to create legendary computers.

I wasn’t on Mac platform until Apple embraced the FreeBSD as its core operating system. The kernel is now FreeBSD based and since I’m a BSD dude, the decision was super-cool and spot-on right for me. I was immediately in love with Mac OS X when it was launched and been a user till now, probably forever. I don’t think I would go back to using the clunky, crash prone Windows :-)

gone, kaput… lost.

I love the Mac OS X, simply because apart from its excellent user interface and usability design, it is based on my favorite operating system – BSD *nix. So, because I’m still such a *nix geek, I still like to roam around the system directories from the Terminal once in a while and deleting stuffs etc using the command line.

But it’s a mistake doing so when the body has been deprived from sleep. I’ve not been having enough sleep lately and I think my brain shutdown for a while when I was deleting some directories just now. I accidentally deleted my photo directory, so Lightroom is now complaining of missing files.

It’s gone, unrecoverable; and I don’t have the Apple’s Time Machine switched on (never liked it anyway).

In this country, RM is a powerful thing. In Unix, rm is a powerful thing too and it gives me a throbbing headache now.

new year, same old stuffs

Happy New Year everyone!

Every year I made resolutions, and at every end of the year I will ask myself if I achieved them… so far the answer has been “no”. So this year, I’m not going to be bothered with any more new year resolutions. I think that’s just like smokers saying that they want to quit smoking. It just won’t happen.

I’ll take things as it comes. I have a few things in mind that I want to accomplish but that has been my goal for several years and I’ll keep on working on it whether it’s this year or next year’s.

Anyway.. we Malaysians celebrate many new years – Maal Hijrah, Deepavali, Gregorian and Chinese new year. In about a month’s time, there will be another new year, so until “next year”, Happy New Year.
